How did you get into djing?

I’ve been making mixes for people for about 8 years. Traktor just makes it stupidly easy to fool around with music and whether you’re playing with techno or ambient music, there’s always something rewarding about looping and stacking sounds on top of each other. I understand method is everything in art, so I will avoid saying I’m a “dj” to save myself from the stale conversation around the definition of “dj labor”. I just love these records. I’m not making a dime pressing these buttons.

I was a music writer for a magazine called Blow Up for many years and for most of those years I thought I’d always be on the listening side of the spectrum, never really getting my hands dirty. Attending techno stuff in NYC and in Berlin last year has inspired this anti-midlife-crisis phase where I have an itch to actually put stuff out there. We’ll see how it develops.

What is your preferred method of playing?

It’s all Traktor. Like a real poser.

Present/Future

I’m making podcast stuff for other friends running sites/parties. That’s about it.

How did you get into djing and producing?

Long story. To make it short, I came out from punk and found myself into promotion of big illegal rave parties in Italy and Europe. I spent all of the nineties creating contexts on where to set dance and techno free on a d.i.y. base. After 20 years I felt the desire to release the absorbtion of musics, images and thoughts into performing it. This is how i came up to dj and funnily enough this moment was convergent to my coming out.

What is your preferred method of playing

Toward digital I would say and I would love to bring the discussion out of a bipolarised dialectics between the sad tropics of an analogic warm sound’s lost purism and the digital designed engineering of the information market. I’d invite to mix every source up and find your own individual way to comunicate, being it a mega set up or a simple two traktor decks in synch. Personally speaking I do not consider myself a dj but a writer bringing my rethorics to a synesthesic experience as my formation is social-anthropology and I work and teach in the queer studies and cultures of conflicts field. So it is about multiplyting languages to expand identities and life visions. It is about you as the filter and it is about the crowd as active response. It is about spaces and times crisis. It is about otherness. It is about liberation.

Present/Future

Well I am co-producing this bi-monthly event in Berlin that became an incredible expereince in one of the biggest and sexually liberating spaces in Berlin called KitKat Club. I am working with JopRec artist Fernando Poo and the label owner Konik Polny and I might start some collaboration in the future the new born techno roman label Black Sam Records.

To give you a meaning of what i think about queer spaces i’ll post you some of the gegen manifesto i wrote one year ago to define the party:

Against yourself. Around queer narratives.

Gegen is a complex word in German because it has two opposite meanings.

Historically speaking it means “against”, signifying all the counter cultural movements since the very beginning of youth cultures but if you apply the word to time, it means “around”. One meaning is closed, defined in terms of space. The other is open and undefined in terms of time. In the contemporary moment the idea of “enemy” — in which a thought and an action can be identifiable as “against” — is not there and is not clear anymore as power relationships changed through the development of post-modernism. And this gave space to markets to regenerate themselves through the queer-counter cultural movements by producing an oligopoly of empty events repeating themselves until their fast extinction and in the same time by crystallising the institutionalisation of big “queer meccas” which exercise more and more power on the scene. This process is verifiable in Berlin as the incubator of new world trends in the arts of entertainment.

This basic tension gives the spaces and the times for a new proposal to blossom from the ashes of the historical and infamous queer techno party called “SABOT°AGE BERLIN” which characterised fades of mutation in some of the wildest Friedricshain nights. The aim is playing with the solitude of the political meaning of GEGEN as a suicidal mechanism of the “self” or the sublime crisis of enemy subtraction as the aggression of dialectics. A linguistic game of pop art where the semantic putsch of “Gegen” becomes the broken mirror of its own impossibilities. The electric fear to find oneself multiple by being against oneself and unrecognisable. The dangers of being desireful in a psycho dramatic performance. The political practice of hallucinatory love to defy hate as antagonistic, identitarian mechanism.

Perceiving the idea of community as a demagogic form for bigger powers like religions, societies and markets to exercise their violence with the fake flag of politically correct partecipation, we do not wish to design a party just to give you a safe space and protection. We are not selling you the possibility to be “queer” for one night. We want to expose you to your own fears and pleasures by pushing you to understand how your own power mechanisms are produced. This is why we invite you to be GEGEN by performing your psychosis, by being the enemy of yourself, by thinking and being out of b/order and by destroying every rational thought.

How did you get into djing?

I am an intermedia artist who has been utilizing dj sets for over a decade to lure listeners into a sensorial state of deep rhythmic and melodic abandon. I’m thoroughly obsessed with collecting and playing with all the different types of deep sounds that the universe has to offer.

After a hearty career of fledgling undergrounding, I got involved with various crews throwing parties in Los Angeles in 1998 and by the year 2000 I had already amassed a sizable collection of deep wax. After finishing fashion school, I got a job with Ovum Recordings from 2003-2005 in marketing and promotions. It was really great experience getting to help out with Ovum shows around the states and especially at WMC. In mid 2004 I met one of the founders of BerettaMusic, Ryski, as we were constantly running into each other at gigs in Southern California. 2005 was the first year I attended DEMF, and became great friends with the rest of the Beretta Crew. I have been integrally involved with the label ever since. I started the deep podcast “Distance Over Time” (http://feeds.feedburner.com/distance_over_time) in March of 2009 which serves as a broader musical framework for Beretta artists to contextualize their work within and also as a gourmet supplement to their personal musical visions.

What is your preferred method of playing?

My ideal setup employs vinyl and serato scratch live with a kontrol x-1 on technics and all routed through a xone mixer – this is setup I created my GaysHateTechno mix with.

How did you get into djing and producing?

Stereogamous came together as a need to inject some future and sexualness into the flacid local scene. We are based in Australia but move around like the seasons. This mix of CDs and vinyl was recorded direct to DAT tape at TROUGH FAGGOT PARTY, our own residency in Melbourne’s legendary sex club 80. It includes one of our own tracks and a remix, plus a bunch of sex positive make out tunes. The next Trough is in April 2012 and then these mens will be playing in the Americas over summer, including Toronto Pride, P-Town and San Francisco. Come and get some.

Present/Future

We have recently collaborated on a track with Shaun J Wright (ex Hercules and Love Affair) which is to be released on Honey Soundsystem record label. We have remixed a plethora of acts, from Kylie to LCD Soundsystem, most recently Light Asylum and Sam Sparro, and are currently collaborating with JD Samson (MEN) and also George Michael on new material.

How did you get into djing and producing?

Djing: I’ve always been into making mixtapes. i remember sitting by the radio as a kid taping songs off the radio and putting it together as a mixtape(first few seconds cut off of songs) , and then in the 90′s trading tapes with friends, and i’ve been told that I make legendary mixtapes so yea……
I’ve been collecting records since my early teens, and then in my late teens early 20′s friends of mine would ask me to play records at their house parties…and that’s basically how it started. I didn’t start to mix or really take it seriously till i started going out to parties in nyc around 2001-02.. I held my first residency and cut my teeth as a disco dj back in 2003 at a party called “Main Ingredients”, and since then i’ve been fortunate enough to have played at: apt, santos party house, passerby, club 205, club love, tribeca grand, and le bain at the standard, 
Producing: I played the drums as a kid, and studied music production/audio engineer in college, but it was daft punk that made me want to produce dance music! ” teachers” is my template! 

What is your preferred method of playing?

In January 2012 I started a record label with my creative partner Daniel Helmer, and in February we put out our first record: Sycorax “Scrapped & Buttered” ep. How did you get into djing?

I got into djing because I had to. It was the natural progression of things. I had been dancing and listening for SO long, the music is a part of me. I was collecting music and mixing it in my head. Djing was the next obvious step. It still hasn’t been that long, but I am truly loving this new outlet. Really submersing myself in it. It’s been a healthy addition to my life. I always have a project going on or thinking about what to do next. Still collecting lots of great tracks and building my library. I’ve been to some AMAZING parties with some fantastic dj’s. That has set the standard pretty high… .I know what I think is good….. Well, don’t we all?

I Use Traktor Pro, Vestax VCI-100, M-Audio FastTrack Pro, and my Dell Laptop

I host and dj a party every first friday called LOVE, located at Flask Lounge in Portland, ME.

How did you get into djing?

I had always had a love for music at a young age. I never even considered DJing until I was still in high school when I started going to raves. I  started buying my first vinyl records shortly after that.  My first gigs and residencies were in Las Vegas the city that I grew up in. After too many years of sin city I decided to pack my bags and head off to cities with more of a Techno following. This brought me to Miami after only one short year in Miami I packed my bags again and headed to San Francisco to follow my techno dreams.

What is your preferred method of playing?

2 Technic 1200 MK5, Serato, Timecoded Vinyl, Vinyl, and a good attitude

Present/Future

Right now I’m finishing up school in Music Business and am on the lookout for talented girls, gays, and gay friendly artists in Techno who share the same vision as me. That vision is to create a quality Techno brand with a diverse spectrum of music and a uniqueness that makes each artist special   I’m also ready to get into the studio soon to work on some original James Demon material.

How did you get into djing?

I got into DJ’ing about 2 years ago after I started going to school for Audio Production. The production side of things really sparked my interest in DJ’ing and mixing other tracks together.

What is your preferred method of playing?

I use Traktor with a Denon DN-MC6000LE controller, I also use Serato Scratch and/or CD’s for gigs that the DJ booth has less room in. I recorded this set with Traktor and its internal mix recorder.

Present/Future

Right now my biggest focuses are: A) Graduating, B) SQURRRL and all things we are planning for the future, C) Getting Rocket Collective off the ground to help benefit Burning Man camps and attendees. I’m also releasing an album in mid March accompanied by a release party. I had a remix released on February 10th on Coconut Palm Records. How did you get into djing?

After years as a drummer, electronic music enthusiast and dancer, I began DJing in 2007 at a radical faerie gathering in the mountains of central Oregon.

I use Traktor Pro 2 with a Traktor S4 mixer. This mix was recorded directly within the software.

Present/Future

As resident DJ and musical director of Burning Man Camp Conception, I’m proud of the gorgeous parties we hosted this year at Burning Man: Rites of Passage 2011, with amazing artists and collaborators from across the spectrum. This live mix was from a Thursday night party called XenoConception, loosely structured around a narrative in my head about a small xenozygote wiggling its way through the cosmos looking for a mate (or three, or eight) and the adventures it had along the way, replete with chance interactions and changes of direction as with the party itself. The evening also featured DJs PG Tomasi & Tatar tag teaming from Want-It! (SF) and Bert & Chewy from Starborne (Seattle).

How did you get into djing?

I have nurtured a lifelong passion for music. From a very early age I experimented with recording music, and began learning about music production in earnest at the age of 13. I’ve since produced music for myself and others in genres spanning house, disco, electronica, and rock; check out my profile at soundcloud.com/heskanen to hear select examples of my work.

My DJ experimentation began while immersed in the club scene of Munich, Germany in 2006 and 2007 as the minimal techno scene was at its peak. Soon afterwards, I acquired turntables, started honing my mixing skills, and developed a DJ aesthetic that encompasses disco, Chicago- acid- tech- and deep- house, and techno.

I moved to San Francisco in November 2009 and immediately felt at home in the city’s alternative queer club scene. I joined the Solid crew (www.solid.dj) in January of 2011. Recently I joined forces with fellow GHT-ers Trevor Sigler, Mat dos Santos, and Brian Maier as Rocket Collective (www.rocketsf.com).

Since starting my DJ career in January 2011, I’ve played at venues including the Stud, Qbar, Rebel, Powerhouse, and 222 Hyde, and I’ve contributed podcasts to Honey Soundsystem and Electronic Music Bears.

What is your preferred method of playing?

I typically use Serato Scratch Live with control vinyl. It marries the convenience of digital storage with the satisfaction of manipulating the turntables. However I’m continuing to grow my vinyl collection.

Present/Future

In January, Rocket Collective launched our new event called ROCKET, which is a party every fourth Saturday at Rickshaw Stop in San Francisco for queers who like underground dance music and radical creativity (as practiced at events like Burning Man, for instance). ROCKET is every fourth Saturday at Rickshaw Stop.
I’m part of a rotating crew of resident DJs at JOE, the Friday night party at Lookout.
I frequently play guest gigs around San Francisco.

How did you get into djing?

I started producing in 1998 some techno tracks with a really basic program but with nice results into techno sounds. As a dj i did on 2000 playing on privates parties and some expos. Since 2002 i started in some small clubs, openings and bars as FEM Madrid, Museo Chicote, Stars café, Suite, etc.. playing more ambient, techno and dubtechno in Madrid. Sometiomes i played tech-house and electro.I was the guest dj in Cassette Club openning in 2006 and I’ve played there two times more.

In 2009 i stopped djing and focus on producing music for websites, advertisements and some art videos. This music was experimental and more into electronic style. Also i made my own postrock project which is stopped until i can create my own band and i started playing drums. There was when SPACEBULLFIGHTERS born as a self project which i hope it will be my own record label soon. Also i still making techno… it’s in my blood!!!

Present & future

In 2011 i decided to move to Berlin cause i want to breathe the techno ambience is his natural being. Now a new project begin, Deerbeat. It’s basicly a techno, dub techno and electronic sounds project. Hope than soon you can hear it.

Soon i will release an EP in T3R Records and will start to move my own project, Spacebullfighters with some friends.

How did you get into djing?

DJ español, fanático de la música electrónica desde que tenía 15 años de edad. Influenciado por los sonidos oscuros y contundentes de sellos como Tresor, UR, Warm up o Plus8. Empecé a pinchar música electrónica en un pequeño pub de mi ciudad natal, donde nadie entendía el techno, pero fue bienvenido. Entonces, el círculo comenzó a crecer y se creó el colectivo “Scorefreq”. A partir de ese momento comenzé a participar en varios clubs y festivales de España como el orgullo gay de Madrid, Metro Dance Club o el festival Explum, donde compartí el escenario con artistas como Angel Molina, Alexander Kowalski y Oliver Huntemann.

How did you get into djing?

I got hooked in middle school when Napster came around. I’d hear a lot of mainstream electronic music in the background of commercials, do a search for what the music was, and then download it. Over time I got to know the more underground producers because of the remixes they did of those tracks, and I just slowly went further down the rabbit hole into where I’m at now. Pretty early in I made the connection that this music had a party culture to go with it, and the minute I turned 18 I was dragging my high school friends with me to the Ohio clubs where I grew up. First time there that was that – I was hooked. Looking back on it, it was kind of weird the route I took into the music. Most of my friends entered into it through raves when they were younger, I came in from the opposite direction.

What’s you preferred method of playing?

I really don’t have a personal preference in method of playing. I love vinyl, I love CDJs, and I just fell in love with my buddy’s Traktor S4 this past weekend (oh no!). My perfect setup will always include Tech 1200s no matter how advanced stuff gets.

Present & future

Humanaut is my original baby out of the projects I have my hands in. That has been around in some form since 2004, and our goal with that one is to focus strictly on house and techno parties — the serious business. We just started a monthly called ‘Out of Order’ at a shitty punk club. Super dingy and dark — it’s perfect. As of right now we have Kirk Degiorgio, Tin Man & Reference lined up to carry us into the summer. The other time suck for me is the VIA Festival, which we launched in October of 2010. It’s an experimental A/V festival in the vein of Mutek, but with a bit broader range of music to it. It’s not so techno oriented, although that is part of the programming as well. For the techno day of the 2011 version we had the Underground Resistance live band play, followed by a Humanaut afterparty with Sutekh, Donato Dozzy & Nuel. Edgar Um (from GHT) is also one of the main music curators for it. I’ve also been in the process of setting up a booking agency called Eightyº with Claude Young, Kirk Degiorgio and some really solid Pittsburgh locals like Shawn Rudiman and Pittsburgh Track Authority. I’m not getting much free time these days.

How did you get into djing?

I started with tape edits and making mixtapes. Friends liked my selections of tracks and how they were programmed. I often did my own remixes by editing sections and extending them by using various versions and remixes of the track by hitting pause & record buttons. i didn’t settle on my own set of decks until 1999! I never would have achieved the skills i have today without the help & support of those who looked out for me back in the 90s.

What’s you preferred method of playing?

My preferred method of deejaying is using vinyl and turntables. I like seeing music performed live so i like my mixes to have a raw and spontaneous feel. Perfect, seamless and tight mixing is the goal but a FEELING is a must. This mix was done in one take using records, 2 turntables and a mixer and was recorded directly to a CD Recorder and not to a laptop. Computer compression was used to upload and send to Gays Hate Techno in an AIFF format. I am beginning to use CDs more in my live sets so i can play unreleased tracks by friends or WAVS that are purchased since more and more new music that i am attracted to is becoming digi only.

Present & future

These days, my buddy Ryan Smith & I are hard at work with our monthly WRECKED party in downtown Manhattan, where house, disco and techno of all styles collide in a  basement for the those who live for the night. the party begins at midnight and can go past 6am. I sometimes dj over seas in Norway and look forward to venturing out to other countries as well. i would really love to dj in Scotland, Berlin, London, Budapest & Spain. i often hear & read about wonderful parties in Australia too.  it is my belief that people look beautiful and at their best when they are dancing…personality and the soul is revealed. When a dancer notices you watching them, they usually smile or get shy. i think it’s incredibly cool and i want to keep people dancing for as long as i can.

How did you get into djing?

I started djing about 13 years ago and got into after getting tired of playing guitar in bands. Producing came around the same time when it dawned on me that I could have control over every aspect of the sounds I was creating instead of just the limited scope of a guitars sound. I really started leaning into production after I got my degree in recording and finally knew my way around a studio and became more fluent in the hardware/software that I was using. Somewhere around the age of 21 I started StirSound as an outlet for both myself and other unknown artists and built a great network of friends. Been musically hibernating for a few years after moving back to the States from Europe and finally getting back into both making and playing music.

What’s you preferred method of playing?

I started out playing all vinyl, switched to Final Scratch and really felt a loss in the emotional connection between what I was playing and what I was feeling. I switched back to all vinyl again when I lived in Europe and was djing full time but now that I’m stateside, there are no record stores in DC, and the dollar sucks for buying records from overseas (especially as a poor student), I’m using a combo of both Traktor Scratch and vinyl. This mix was recorded with Traktor with 3 decks and a controller because I didn’t have access to decks. It gave me the opportunity to loop and layer more so there’s quite a bit of 3 tracks playing at a time in this one.

Present & future

I’m really excited to be working behind the scenes with the Gays Hate Techno crew at the moment. Not sure where it will go but hoping to bring some great podcasts promoting gay artists and djs. Been working on a bunch of new tracks that I can’t seem to find the time to finish. Had a remix come out on Black Montanas under the name Controlled Choas recently and another coming out on More or Less out of Baltimore in the near future.

How did you get into djing?

I was  born & raised in Bucharest (Romania), and got into Djing many moons ago. My first few gigs were playing fetish parties & fashion shows in the Los Angeles area. My tech heavy setup & original mixes got lots of attention when I was worked as Butcher’s Porn, bruiserbox, & the rabbit. I had a residency at the Gold Coast bar in West Hollywood, CA where I did two nights (Wednesday & Saturday) for a year before leaving to pursue working with other clubs, parties, & filmmaking. I’ve played at Akbar, the Roosevelt, Paddy’s, MJ’s, & tons of other bars & clubs

What’s you preferred method of playing?

Traktor on 4 decks connected through Albleton Live for effects & loops. The GHT mix is filled with my all time favorite techno tracks. The GHT mix was recorded live on 2x CDJ2000s & a DJM2000.
