How did you get into DJing?

Grew up playing music/singing in church and at home. In high School/College played in punk, rock, and jam/funk bands. In 1993 on Thanksgiving night I candy-flipped at a warehouse on Harrison St. in San Francisco. I have been in love with dance music ever since. Technically my first experience was in the parking lot of the Oakland Coliseum sucking down nitrous balloons at DJ Garth’s Disco Bus but I digress…I started buying records and trying my hand at DJing in 1996-1997. In 1999 I started producing my own tracks. In 2004 I pressed 200+ copies of a white label of 4 of my tracks. I am more in love with this music than ever before. I live to be in my basement making tracks or on the dance floor shakin’ my ass. Truth be told…I am a dancer. That’s why I am here still a part of this scene. I just love dancing! Oh yeah…and I am an unapologetic raver that still sees the positive possibilities with the human race.

What is your preferred method of playing?

I DJ in Abelton Live with an AKAI APC40 controller. I generally will add some drum sounds and sometimes loops of tracks I am working on to add texture to the mix. I live for the extended mix of 2-3 tracks with added percussion. The way I like to mix is greatly influenced by the old Richie Hawtin set up 3 turntables and a 909. It s not uncommon for me to keep 2 or more tracks playing together for well over a minute.

How did you get into DJing?

When I was a kid I listened often in my bedroom a radio show called Dj Mix on a Italian FM Radio, i used to recorded in tapes every session of the show. It was in 1984 and I played those tapes for years over and over before starting to buy those vinyls I was listening in my walkman. It was Acid House! At the same time I discovered the New Sound of Belgium called New Beat!
Some years later my vinyl collection were growing up more and more, collecting early house, italo disco, new wave, acid house, experimental music, rocksteady, minimal synth…
In the early nineties I played in Switzerland (Geneve) for the first time in a famous place called L’Usine, the sensation making and seeing people dancing started me as DJ until nowdays.
When I moved to Brussels in 1996 I started my radio show on an independant radio called Radio Panik (www.radiopanik.org). In 1999, with some friends we created our label called Pneu (www.pneu.org) and we start to run some parties. In 2005 I met some italian djs and I started to collaborate with them (Discolooser, Subwoofer, Cockette,…)

Preferred method of playing

I mostly use vinyls but also cds. When I travel I use as well Serato Scratch.

Present/Future

I’m still running my radio show each wednesday from 8.30 to 10 pm on Radio Panik 105.4 FM Brussels
We recently released on Pneu Records the LP Palais Chalet: a compilation with some bands that played at our party during the last years.
Out soon my remix of Sambaca of ALIEN ALIEN on Roccodisco (featuring as well remixes by GM POP and Fabrizio Mammarella).. more remixes are coming.

How did you get into DJing?

I got into DJing around 2003, after years of music hoarding, playing in bands and writing about music for some alt weeklies and rags in SF and Minneapolis. After forcing one too many mixtapes on a friend, she suggested I channel that NRG into DJing, and then got me my first gig (thanks, Campbell!). I also started composing film scores with that same friend using vintage synths, processed guitars and drum machines around that time. I moved back to the Midwest in 2008, and, re-fell in love with house and techno, and started taking the actual craft of DJing seriously. I came back to San Francisco in 2010 and started playing that stuff out, and, also recently started making music again.

Preferred method of playing

When I started getting back into house & techno, I also started re-buying dance records and reconnecting with music I loved when I first started clurrrbbing. DJing those genres is still fairly new for me, so, playing and mixing with records and high quality coasters…I mean burned CDs, provides a really interesting challenge that I can’t see myself getting tired of anytime soon. The fact that I now can mix the records I used to obsessively listen to in my little apartment in Minneapolis has been one of the most rewarding experiences I’ve ever had. With that said, I also think Serato is perfect for events where I have to hop from one disparate genre to another, and, I use it when the need arises. I have always loved buying records, but, I also now enjoy the digital hunt and instant gratification it provides. Since it’s the year 2013 and we do not appear to be moving backwards in time, I’ll most likely continue to buy both.

Present/Future

I recently started a record label with two friends – dabecy and Exillon – called Jacktone, and, we just released our first 12” (jacktonerecords.com). I’m also trying to find the perfect home for my radio show/podcast I co-host called Dots and Loops. I’m venue shopping in SF and Oakland for a new residency, and gigging around town/everywhere as often as I can. I’m excited to focus more on production this year and am chomping at the bit to travel to new spots, meet some like-minded music jerks, and, continue to absorb everything I can about DJing and production. I feel like I learn 100 new things about music everyday and I hope that never changes. I’m truly grateful for all the opportunities I’ve been given so far by my pals and they never cease to amaze and inspire me. It feels great to be part of such a supportive music community, so, thanks for letting me submit this mix!

How did you get into DJing?

Mat dos Santos and David Sternesky are Two Dudes in Love. We each have long histories of production, DJing, and promoting. Now we are sharing our love for each other and our love of music with the world.

What is your preferred method of playing?

We use whichever medium gives us the appropriate kind of creative expression depending on the situation. For this recording we used Serato Itch and an Allen & Heath Xone DX controller.

This live set is from a party we produced at Burning Man for Comfort & Joy on August 28, 2012. The party was called The Mechanization of Fertility. The party began as an celebration of human sensuality with groovy, soulful house music setting the vibe – but that’s not what you’ll hear in this recording.

At midnight, when this recording begins, the music abruptly changed to mechanistic, driving techno as bright strobe lights suddenly filled the tent. The garden of earthly delights was invaded by a procession of interstellar robot sex workers. The mechanical hustlers presented a mating dance to the human natives to awaken their sexual desires. Human fertility was usurped by mechanical fertility, and the human citizens willfully gave themselves over to robotic pleasure. Man and machine danced vertically and horizontally until the early hours of the morning (when the power source failed and the recording got cut off).

How did you get into DJing?

I started DJing in 1995 and seriously producing in 2004. I am mostly concerned with melting brains and rearranging atoms. I like to think of it as confrontational techno with some funk in the trunk.

Present/Future

Right now I have a forthcoming release co-written with Adam Jay on Translucent with remixes by Mattias Fridell and Ground Loop.

How did you get into DJing?

I’ve always loved music especially from around the age of 17 when I started going to good clubs here in the UK like Gatecrasher, Sankeys, The Attic, The Music Box and Back to Basics.

I always wanted some decks at that age but could never afford them at the time. My friend got a pair of Technics for his 21st birthday, this was the first time I ever had a go at trying to mix but nothing serious. It wasn’t until 3 years ago I got some turntables of my own at which stage I was really into the Deep House sound and that’s what I started mixing with.

What is your preferred method of playing?

Personally I use Technics MK5 1210 turntables & Traktor Scratch Pro and I like both vinyl and digital formats. With so much good music out right now it’s easier on the wallet to buy my music digitally.

Present/Future

I spend a lot of time searching for new music but DJ’ing is just a hobby, I’ve only ever done one gig before and that was last year for a mates birthday. Sadly I don’t get much time to practice because of the neighbours. In the future I’d like to get more time behind the decks, maybe start a night of my own and dabble in some production.

How did you get into DJing?

I got into producing about 2 years ago with Ableton Suite.

Some of the best moments of my entire life, times where I have felt to be at the pinnacle of my existance, have been dancing with my friends to this kind of music, particularily deeper minimal/house. Having so much bass in this kind of music enables a very rare and intimate form of collective joy with those around you, because you’re all simultaneously moving together while not just hearing the music, but (more importantly IMO) you’re also feeling it together. That’s been my experience with it, and being as touched as I am, and because of musics over all capabilities for my personal growth, I feel the need to contribute. I feel the need for others to have these feelings that music makes me have when I’m dancing with those dear to me. So I bought Ableton.

What is your preferred method of playing?

I’ve only ever DJ’d with Ableton + APC 40. As I just mentioned, I got into Ableton for producing, I’m much more interested in producing than I am in DJing, but I certainly love to DJ. I’m still pretty new with production and everyone can hear it, but over all I improve in leaps and bounds with every new track I make. They’re all on my soundcloud page, soundcloud.com/tisdale

That being said, after learning production basics in Ableton, I just kind of inherently knew how to DJ based on everything I had already learned, so why not put it to use? Oh, also I made this mix “live” in my room in one shot with said software/hardware.

Present/Future

I’ve recently begun my most exciting musical venture called “WHAT?” with Trevor Sigler, Joe Pickett, and Dima, which is every wednesday at 222 hyde from 7 to midnight. I’m enjoying DJing but am even more passionate about making music and learning. I would love a mentor who’s well versed in production that might want to take on a n00b Also if you like my mix and want me to DJ for you, just ask, I’d love that!

How did you get into DJing?

i started buying techno and house 12″around 1994 being inspired by the dj’s i was seeing at the underground parties taking place in detroit. that insatiable desire to hunt down music hasn’t diminished 18 years later. only the means to to do so has evolved.

What is your preferred method of playing?

i still lug around bags of vinyl to gigs but also play cd’s. the one thing that hasn’t changed is a tendency for being over prepared for a gig.

Present/Future

i currently dj around san francisco and beyond and help throw a weekly sunday night party with the honey soundsystem crew. on the side i continue to hone my production skills. coming up very shortly i’ve got a remix being put out collaboratively on 12″ between honey soundsystem & cocktail d’amore. it’s a song called “face love anew” by stereogamous featuring the vocal talents of shaun j wright. definitely check it out!

How did you get into DJing?

Desde niño me sentía atraído por los sonidos electrónicos y fui creciendo interesándome por todo lo que conlleva la electrónica, rodeándome siempre de gente que entiende el concepto de la música electrónica como arte. Siempre suelo estar mas en la pista de baile que trabajando como Dj , adquiriendo conocimientos y asistiendo siempre a todo tipo de festivales como “Sonar” , clubs como “Florida 135″ ademas de Raves y conciertos. Siempre he tratado y he conseguido relacionarme con profesionales , de los cuales he aprendido a jugar, y actuar como Dj en alguna ocasión. Desde hace dos años participo una vez al mes en una emisora de radio de Belgica ” Radio Panik” donde emiten mis Sets. para mi siempre ha sido muy importante el concepto de un set, tratando de crear historias y sentimientos . es lo que me gusta ofrecer . He tenido la ocasión de jugar en festivales independientes de moda “MIDE” y en algún que otro evento cultural.

Participated for two years once a month on a Belgian radio station “Radio Panik” where my issue Sets. for me has always been very important to the concept of a set, trying to create stories and feelings. is what I like to offer. I had the chance to play in independent fashion festivals “MIDE” and the odd cultural event.
